Various school activities have been organized since the university founded with the aim of complementing the students' academic studies, thus enriching student life on the campus.



1. Athleticsr


Athletic programs at Hong-Ik are very active and wide-ranging. There are as many as six intercollegiate sports clubs, including men's basketball, men's volleyball, baseball, taekwondo, fencing and soccer. The recently built gymnasium has made a great contribution to encouraging intercollegiate athletic programs, as well as general athletic education programs.

2. Extracurricular Activities


Students of Hong-Ik are encouraged to participate in extracurricular activities to pursue their particular areas of interest. There are over 40 different groups covering a wide spectrum of activities according to their respective areas of special interest. They are sports, further academic studies, arts, religion, service to the community, and others. Each year sees the birth of new groups to reflect the expanding areas of students' interest.

3. International Programs


As of October 1, 1995, Hong-Ik University is maintaining a sisterhood relationship with 10 foreign universities. They are: California State University in Los Angeles, California (USA); Central Conneticut State University in New Britain, Conneticut (USA); The University of North Carolina in Charlotte. North Carolina (USA); Osaka University of Arts in Osaka (Japan); The Metal-Polymer Research Institute of Belarus Academy of Sciences (Belarusia); Yanbin University (China); Xi'an Jiaotong University (China); Curtin University of Technology in Perth (Australia); University of Art and Design in Helsinki (Finland). Under the exchange agreements, students can spend up to one year at one of these institutions taking courses of their interest while getting credits for their course work there. Faculty members can also spend a year at these institutions on an exchange basis. The university also offers, for a three-hour credit, a four-week summer language program in the U.S., so far at the UNCC English Language Training Institute. A winter language institute is also being planned. In addition to these university-wide programs, individual colleges and departments have various summer programs in which, under the supervision of professors, students spend 4 weeks during the summer visiting overseas universities that have outstanding programs in their respective areas.

4. Student Council


The Student Council, as an organization which represents the students of Hong-Ik, is made up of seven student representatives. It has several divisions including general affairs, academics, art, public relations, athletics, student welfare and coed affairs. The Council sponsors a variety of student programs which cover freshman orientation, the Hong-Ik festival, intramural athletic competitions, research paper presentations, seminars and special lectures. It has contributed to enhancing the level of university culture.
