1. Educational Technology Center

The Educational Technology Center, established in 1971 and enlarged in 1994, serves the faculty members
and students in a variety ways. The services include purchasing and producing instructional audio visual
materials, managing and repairing audio visual equipment, operating language laboratories and assisting
with audio visual equipment in various school activities.
There are two types of language laboratories. One is used for regular classroom work and the other for
individual study. The latter helps students practice language on their own. The center also has multi-media
rooms for small-group meetings

2. Broadcasting Station

The Broadcasting Station, "H.I.B.S.," began its operation on May 17,1973. It has successfully performed
its function of providing the Hong-Ik students with the campus news and of raising their cultural awareness
since then. In order to contribute to developing campus culture, the station has also sponsored a festival
in which broadcasting personnel participate and compete with one another since 1974.
Hong-Ik University was selected as the winner on several occasions in the competition of university
broadcasting programs sponsored by the Mun Hwa Broadcasting Corporation, one of the three national television
networks. H.I.B.S. makes efforts to carry a variety of educational programs.

3. Gymnasium

The Gymnasium was opened early in 1986 for the purpose of providing facilities and equipment
for the athletic activities of the University. The five-story building, one of the best university gymnasiums
in Korea, was built on a space of 9,499 square meters. Its maximum seating capacity reaches 2,400 including
1,592 spectators' seats in the swimming pool. It houses a standard size court for basketball and volleyball,
a large swimming pool, exercise rooms, sports club rooms, and locker rooms. The swimming pool with a total
space of 1,012.5 square meters has six lanes and a springboard for diving. It is also fully equipped with
good lighting system for night use. The Gymnasium will be used for various athletic events, basketball,
volleyball, swimming, badminton, table tennis, gymnastics, judo, wrestling and boxing. Besides, students
will be able to enjoy some cultural activities there such as concerts and dramas

4. Institute of Fine Arts & Design Education

Hong-Ik has proved itself again to be a leading institution of higher learning especially
in the field of fine arts and design by setting up the Institute of Fine Arts & Design Education in 1986.
The Institute, as an institution for adult education, is to educate members of the general public who have
interest in theories and/or practical training of fine arts. Programs run for a period of six months or one
year. Participants will be given certificates as soon as they complete the program requirements.

5. Institute for Computer Science

The Institute for Computer Science plays a very important role in developing programs necessary for the
educational research and in managing the academic affairs of the school by providing technical assistance.
Such extensive administrative helps as those related to the entrance examination, classroom registration and
transcript are given by the Institute. Besides, with the opening of a computer science course required to all
incoming freshmen, its role reaches directly every individual student.

6. Career Development and Placement Office

The major role of the Placement Office is to help students find jobs, either part-time or full-time, and
either during the school years or upon graduation. To this end, the office provides as much information as
possible concerning job openings around the country, invites directors of personnels offices of major business
companies and publishes a periodic booklet, Job Search Information.

7. Student Guidance Center

The Student Guidance Center was established in 1969 for the purpose of providing individual guidance
services for the students of Hong-Ik University. Since then, the center has expanded its services to include
individual and group counseling, psychological testing, placement, overseas study programs, seminars,
publication of a periodical called Journal of Student Life, and a student orientation booklet called For
Hong-Ik freshmen.

8. Student Health Center (Infirmary)

The Student Health Center is designed to assist faculty members and students with problems related to their
physical and emotional health. Faculty and students are able to consult two professional school doctors,
a general practitioner and a dentist, through the center.

9. University Newspapers

Two newspapers are published by students. One is written in Korean and the other in English. The former,
"Hong-dae Shinmoon," first appeared on August, 10,1955. It has contributed to enhancing the quality of
university journalism and publicizing Hong-Ik University on and off campus. The newspaper is published every
week during school sessions.On the other hand, the English paper, "Hong-Ik Tidings," first appeared on August,
31,1985. Published every month, it improves English education at the University and plays a role for its
publicity at home and abroad.

10. University Library

Created in 1948 and being drastically enlarged in 1979, the University Library is now accommodated in a
six-story building. With its branch in Cho-Chi-Won campus which opened in 1989, the library contains more
than 800,000 volumes in its 11,000 square-meter building.
The library consists mainly of study-material
rooms and reading rooms. The study-material rooms include those for reference books, periodicals, rare
books, dissertations and electronic-information. All the books and other materials are located on open
shelves for students to browse through. The electronic-information room is equipped with the DIALOG system,
the largest data bank in the world. Here students can refer to up-to-date international information.
In addition, both the CD-ROM and microfilm reader provide access to the latest information. The library
also has access to CHOLLIAN, DYNAMIC (U.S.A.), BOLDSC (England), and LINNET (Pohang Institute of Science &
Technology). Most recently, the LAN was introduced on campus for the first time in Korean universities,
and data, which are now Òon-line,Ó can be searched for from any part of the campus, including homes through
the public network. The reading rooms, which are to be found on each floor for studentsÕ convenience, are
soundproof and air-conditioned. Their lighting is also good: each seat is individually illuminated so that
users can enjoy reading in the best possible conditions by adjusting the lighting to suit their own needs.
Up to 3,500 students may comfortably study here at any one time.

11. University Museum

The history of the University Museum goes back to 1967 when the Modern Art Gallery of Hong-Ik College was set
up with the collection donated by Lee, Do Young, the founder of Hong-Ik University. The Gallery was located on
the second floor of the University Library in order to exhibit such artistic works as graphics, sculpture and
calligraphy. The size and scope of the collection have grown steadily to include classic works of art and
archaeological folk art items. It was in 1971 that the Gallery was designated as the University Museum.
The University Museum has performed its function of collection and exhibition more successfully in
Moon Heon Kwan, the tallest 16-story building in the Hong-Ik campus, since 1974.

12. University Press

The University Press was established in 1974 in order to raise academic standards of Hong-Ik University
by publishing and distributing books for regular courses, research papers and school pamphlets. After
joining the Korean University Press Association in1982, it has published numerous books in various subject
fields. The Hong-Ik University Press is making a great effort to encourage achievement in University research.
