The university purchased the former site of the Korean Institute for Design Promotion (KIDP) located at Yeongeon-dong, Jongno-Gu to create an auxiliary campus for the exchange and promotion of design. The historic site was formerly used by Seoul National University for its Fine Arts School for 30 years since 1946, then by KIDP as the birthplace of Korean design industry for another 25 years. The site has special symbolic meaning as the birthplace of Korean artistic design, representing the mainstream development of Korean artistic design. In opening the Daehakro campus and SIDP(Seoul International Design Plaza), we hope to achieve our educational goal of establishing further ties between art and industry. This is one of the university's special projects. We also hope to develop it to house an institution representing the finest in arts and design education. The Daehakro campus will concentrate on fostering a close connection between the College of Fine Arts and the graduate school, on supporting projects for educational-industrial complexes, and on nurturing the E-Design Academy. It will also run interdisciplinary programs that connect design and engineering; design and management; design, philosophy, and literature. Such projects will provide important opportunities for Hongik University to be reborn as a world-famous institution in design.
