The Hongik PACE Center was opened in Oct. 2005 thanks to a grant from the PACE Program. The PACE Program is a global industry-academia collaborative education program founded in 1999. The PACE stands for Partners for the Advancement of Collaborative Engineering Education - the Partners here refer to General Motors, EDS, Sun Microsystems, and UGS. The main goal of the PACE Program is to foster collaborative engineering education for tomorrow's engineers. The Partners, along with participating software companies called contributors, contribute strategically selected -- currently about forty -- colleges and universities worldwide with high-end workstations and a complete lineup of up-to-date engineering software. The hardware and software contributed are those currently in use by engineers and designers of most world-class automotive companies, which means that the type of engineering education made possible through the grant is highly valuable to students seeking related job opportunities.
Hongik University is the first in Korea to be designated a PACE Institution, and has received in-kind contribution worth over 200 million US dollars from the PACE Program. The Hongik PACE Center has been expanding its activities, with a focus on integrating the software into the curricula of all related engineering and industrial design programs at the University. The Center has also aggressively sought collaboration with the companies participating in the PACE Program. For instance, recruitment of Hongik graduates by GM Daewoo has increased dramatically since 2005, and is still growing.
Among many activities of the Hongik PACE Center, its participation in the PACE Global Vehicle Development Project stands out. The Project for the current year involves designing and building a Formula 1 Race Car through collaboration of over ten participating PACE Institutions. Our students in the Project present their work and engage in frequent discussions over the Internet with students of other participating PACE Institutions scattered around the world.
The Hongik PACE Center will always strive to fulfil the spirit of the PACE Program by providing high-quality collaborative engineering and industrial design education to all interested students.
