Graduate School
The Graduate School offers advanced programs leading to the master's and doctoral degrees in a variety of academic fields. At present the master's degree is conferred on those who have completed school work successfully in 54 specialized fields : 20 in engineering, 17 in liberal arts and sciences, and 17 in fine arts & design. The doctoral degree is offered in 34 areas of study : 16 in engineering and mathematics, 14 in liberal arts, and 4 in fine arts & design.

The university also encompasses 11 specialized graduate schools that offer masters degrees in selected areas and 1 professional design graduate school. The programs are designed to provide students with advanced theoretical and practical knowledge in their major studies. Upon successful completion of graduate programs, students enter widely diverse professional careers in research, business, and teaching.

International Design School for Advanced Studies (IDAS) : [English Homepage]
Originally founded in 1996 by the MOCIE (Ministry of Commerce, Industry & Energy), the International Design school for Advanced Studies (IDAS) is the first professional graduate school of design in Korea. The educational and professional goal of IDAS is to produce world-class professional designers who can work in glocal (global and local) arena with people from other disciplines.

IDAS has reached at an international competitiveness in less than a decade through its unique program, curricula, faculties, and facilities. The unique educational program of IDAS approaches design from the art, science and engineering, and management. IDAS offers a Ph.D and 3 different Master of Design programs such as Product Design, Digital Media Design, and Design Management.

As of September 1, 2004, IDAS has become the only professional graduate school of design of Hongik University. This was the first action that an established university executed to streamline the educational structure in preparation for the educational reform coming in the 21st century to improve the competitiveness.

Graduate School of Advertising & Public Relations : Established in 1997 and has expanded to offer majors in advertising public relations, cultural contents, brand management, multi-media, and sales promotion event. The curriculum integrates high level education based on communication, marketing and design with emphasis on practical usage for the working professionals. The students are encouraged to conduct theoretical research and creative project based field study that leads to the final development of innovative studies.

Graduate School of Architecture & Urban Design :Established in 1981 to address the social, psychological aspect of the urban environment and to produce a well-versed designer balanced in the areas of cultural and artistic diversity, practical knowledge and technological advances. The program offers seven major programs in Architecture, Interior Design, Real Estate Development, Urban Planning and Civil Engineering. It has been developed to serve the needs of students and practitioners interested in continuing their educations in their professions. The Architecture & Interior division stress architectural & interior planning and design while the urban Design division focuses on urban and regional planning. It combines a theoretical and practical approach to design and planning which reinforces the relationship between knowledge and application.

Graduate School of Education : Offers 15 major programs in educational administration, educational psychology, counselling, and special subject areas such as English education, math education, computer education, history education and Korean language education. The primary aim is to educate administrative and pedagogical experts in the field of education.

Graduate School of Educational Management : Focuses on educating future policy makers and managers of educational establishments. Offers 5 major programs in educational policy, school management, facility management, supervision and university administration.

Graduate School of Film & Digital Media : Established in 2004, the school provides experience with the study of film and digital media based on design aspects. Students can either concentrate on learning the latest techniques of film and digital media, aesthetics and theories, simulation or offering an opportunity of meeting superior counselors. The graduate program offers majors in Film design, interaction design, Production design, Digital Animation and Game Contents. The school provides HD, SD or mixed resolution editing equipments such as Quantel eQ editing workstation, Avid, Final Cut Pro and Premiere editing system as well as fully equipped Sound Recording Studio and Sony F900 HD camera. The school offers 4 semesters of course study and 1 semester of thesis development.

Graduate School of Industrial Arts : Offers 2 major programs in industrial design and industrial craft. The programs focus is on the balanced treatment of the theoretical and practical skills needed by practicing industrial designers to function as professionals in business and academia.

Graduate School of Information : The school teaches skills and experiences in applying computer and communications technologies to diverse fields of engineering. Offers 8 major programs in computer science and information technologies.

Graduate School of International Business Administration : The primary goal is to educate future managers who can comfortably function in a global environment by stressing experiences with information technologies and practical skills.

Graduate School of Tax Studies : First of its kind in Korea when it was established in 1994, the school aims to produce tax specialists familiar with the latest trends in economics, management practices, and trade issues.

Graduate School of Fine Arts : Offering major programs in Oriental Painting, Painting, Printmaking, Sculpture, Art Planning and Management, the school provides students with paricipating in various fine arts activities. In these Programs, students may choose to concentrate on either building knowledges of art materials and a wide range of technical skills required in contemporary visual arts world or acquiring contemporary theories and practices required for planning exhibitions and management in the visual arts.

Graduate School of Industry (Jochiwon Campus) : Established in 1996, the school provides diverse programs in the fields of industrial engineering, design and management. It offers 4 programs in industrial engineering, 5 programs in design and 3 programs in management. The design programs, including advertising design, animation, advertising communication, color design, interior design and game producting are very active.
