Hong-Ik College of Architecture is an independent College of Architecture, offering a 5-year program in Architecture and a 4-year program in Interior Design.
In accordance with the educational ideology of Hong-Ik University, the College of Architecture, dedicated to the development of well-balanced, creative, forward thinking, rational minds, offers courses related to the latest in research and development within the building industries; in order to educate outstanding design professionals who are equipped with the intelligence and where-with-all to function as contributing leaders in the knowledge-based society of the 21st century.
In 2002, the college modified its curriculum to a 5-year professional degree program in order to meet the growing demands that globalization has placed upon architecture schools worldwide. The Korean Architectural Accreditation Board (KAAB) has specified criteria in the fields of design, culture, history, technology and practice, for accreditation. Hong-Ik University's 5-year curriculum has integrated these criteria into its existing program, while maintaining its identity; an identity developed over the course of its 50 year history.
A conscious effort has been made to relate the various disciplines offered in each given and to emphasize the interdependence of the courses within the curriculum. The first year is dedicated to introducing the fundamentals of architectural design, building technology, and computer skill. Courses in artistic expression, architectural communication, structures and computer technology are among the subjects offered.
Building upon the first year foundation, the second year offers courses in introductory design, Architectural CAD, Model Making Techniques, Structural Mechanics, Materials and Methods, History of Architecture, as well as Practical English for Architects and Engineers. Urban scale team projects are offered in the third year, supplemented by courses in planning, structures and history.
In the fourth and the fifth years, advanced courses in Design and Structural Analysis, History and Theory are offered, together with courses with direct practical applications, such as Building Codes, Planning, Management and Cost Estimating.
Internship Programs with different Architectural and Construction firms as well as Exchange Programs with Universities worldwide are in the process of being developed for fourth and fifth year students. In the fifth year, students must concentrate on a graduate thesis project. Students are encouraged to develop thesis topics that contribute to the ever changing field of Architecture.
